          H.A. Brouwer's Biography

          Dutch structural geologist, petrologist, mineralogist and author. He was a specialist in the geology of the Dutch Indies, Lapland and Southern Spain and the structural geology and the creation of mountains in general.
          He was the youngest of three brothers. His father was a teacher. His eldest brother was the famous Dutch mathematician Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer. Both became a member of the Dutch Academy of Science (KNAW).
          Brouwer studied mining engineering under G.A.F. Molengraaff at Delft Technical University and became an engineer in 1908. On 12 October 1910 he promoted with the dissertation “Oorsprong en samenstelling der Transvaalsche nepheliensyenieten’ in Delft after a visit to South Africa.
          On 18 January 1918 he was appointed as a professor in historic geology and palaeontology at the Delft Technical University. His inauguration speech on 22 February 1918 had the title”: “Phasen der bergvorming in de Molukken”.
          Later he would also be appointed in Utrecht, Amsterdam and Ann Arbor University in Michigan.
          He died 18 November 1973.
