          Gustave Planchon's Biography

French pharmacologist and entomologist best known for his research on the anatomical structure of vegetal drugs (or animal in the case of mealybugs). Somewhat difficult to classify, his work was devoted to pharmacology and various fields of the natural sciences and to all its sub-categories, in particular plant physiology, phytopaleontology, botanical geography (geobotany) and entomology. He became a pioneer in the determination of drugs by studying their external morphology with the aid of the microscope, enabling him to rectify erroneous identifications (Kermes vermilio vs Kermes ilicis) much more accurately. He died on 13 April 1900 in Montpellier, aged 66.
