Gustave Courtois's Human Design Chart
4/6 Self Projected ProjectorFrench painter, a representative of the academic style of art, known for his portraits and genre, religious or mythological scenes often featuring handsome and muscled male nudes. He was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889 and made a Chevalier in the Légion d’Honneur.
Through his life, Courtois was in close friendship with Pascal Dagnan-Bouveret (1852-1929), together with whom he maintained a fashionable studio in Neuilly-sur-Seine from the 1880s. The pair met while studying together at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris as protegés of Jean-Léon Gérôme.
Courtois taught painting at Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Académie Colarossi, Paris, where Harriet Campbell Foss, Georges d’Espagnat, Eva Bonnier, Emma Cheves Wilkins, and Dora Hitz were students. Among his students were Willard Dryden Paddock, Mary Rose Hill Burton, and Sara Page.
Courtois sought refuge in the Swiss canton of Ticino with his lover, the artist’s model and painter Carl Ernst von Stetten (1857-1942), for the duration of the First World War. He maintained a very close correspondence with Robert Fernier while the latter was at the front.
Gustave Courtois died on 25 November 1923 at 1:00 AM at age 71 in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
