          Gustave Charles Chancel's Biography

          French chemist.
          In 1844, his research on butyric are published in the Compendium of foreign scholars published by the Academy of Sciences, offering him a place among the renowned chemists. He holds a position of assistant chemist at the School of Mines in 1846 and received his doctorate in chemistry in 1848, when he was appointed Deputy Gerhardt professor at the Faculty of Sciences of Montpellier. Together, they make many discoveries, including that of propyl alcohol, leading Chancel became interested in analytical and organic chemistry. It is tenured in 1852 when his master leaves Montpellier. He was then elected as Dean of the Faculty from 1865 to 1879 until he left to become rector of the Academy of Montpellier. Chancel was a member of many learned societies, including the Academy of Sciences of Montpellier. He is the author of many works applying chemistry to oenology (wine plastering, artificial coloring. He was appointed an Officer of Education on August 17, 1868 Officer of the Legion of Honor on July 9, 1886 and Knight of the Rose of Brazil on July 20, 1872.
          He died 5 August 1890.
