Gustav Rudolf Sellner's Biography
German actor, playwright, director and theater director.
Gustav Rudolf Sellner began his career as an actor, playwright and theater director at theaters in Mannheimunder Sioli Francesco (1925-1927), in Gotha (1928/29) and Coburg (1929-1931). Between 1932 and 1937 he served as senior director, playwright and actor at the National Theatre Oldenburg worked.
After Sellner had stepped through several productions for the purposes of Nazi cultural policy, in 1937 he was appointed Acting Director of the Oldenburg State Theatre. Three years later, he became director of the City Theater in Göttingen (1940-1943). Sellner was then director of the Municipal Theatre of Hanover (1943/44).
In April 1944, Sellner was appointed by Adolf Hitler as general director of the Municipal Theater Hannover. After the end of World War II he was in American captivity and was imprisoned until 1947. From 1948 to 1951 he worked as a director in Kiel , Essen and Hamburg. From 1951 to 1961 Sellner was director of the Darmstadt Theatre. Sellner was regarded at that time as a classic representative director. In the early 1960s he turned to directing opera. From 1961 to 1972 he was the general manager and executive director of the Deutsche Oper in West Berlin.
He died 8 May 1990.
