          Gustav Kögel's Biography

          German Benedictine monk, missionary and photographic pioneer, who invented the technique of ultra-violet radiation for the examination of manuscripts; a discovery which grew out of his interest in deciphering palimpsests. He took the religious name of Brother/Father Raphael at the Beuron Cloister. He died on 27 November 1945, aged 63, in Karlsruhe.
