          Giuseppe Ungaretti's Biography

          Ungaretti was an Italian modernist poet, journalist, essayist, critic and academic. He was born in Alexandria, Egypt into a family from Lucca, Tuscany. His father worked for the Suez Canal and died a a fatal accident in 1890. 1912 Ungaretti moved to Paris, France and attended lectures at the Collège de France and the University of Paris. He was one of the most prominent contributors to the 20th century Italian literature. Ungaretti debuted as a poet while fighting in the trenches of World War I. After his marriage he settled again in Italy as a Foreign Ministry employee. He joined the National Fascist Party. He worked as a journalist with Benito Mussolini. Later he worked as Professor at the University of Rome, but was expelled because of this fascist connections. His colleagues voted in favor for his return, though.
          He died in the year 1970 with bronchopneumonia.
