          Giovanni Silva's Biography

          Italian astronomer and scientist who founded Asiago’s Astrophysical Observatory. His research contributed to classical astronomy, geodetic astronomy, gravimetry and photometry, making him internationally renowned.
          Graduated in mathematics at the University of Padua in 1904, he became assistant to the chair of geodesy. In 1911 he transferred to the Astronomical Observatory. From 1921 to 1925 he was a professor of geodesy at the University of Turin, directing the astronomical observatory of Pino Torinese. In 1925 he became Professor of Astronomy at the University of Padua, where he remained until his appointment as professor emeritus.
          He died in Padova on 20 October 1957, aged 75.
