          Giovanni Dalmasso's Biography

          Italian agronomist who founded the Viticulture Experimental Station in 1923, where he started a vigorous research activity for the genetic improvement of vines and the elimination of the negative agronomic characteristics of some vines, and conducted research on direct hybrids.
          In addition to his research activities, Dalmasso was a journalist and writer. In 1937, with Arturo Marescalchi, he wrote Storia della vite e del vino in Italia, one of the largest wine-growing works ever written in Italy.
          In 1949 he was among the founders and first president of the Italian Academy of Life and Wine. In 1947 he published the first edition of Viticoltura moderna (Modern Viticulture), a manual published by Hoepli which is still the reference text of the Italian viticulture industry today.
          He died in Turin on 13 December 1976, aged 90.
