          French mathematician known for the Roberval balance, a weighing scale he presented to the French Academy of Sciences in 1669. He also coined the term ‘trochoid.’
          He was born at Roberval near Beauvais, France. His name was originally Gilles Personne or Gilles Personier, with Roberval the place of his birth. He died on 27 October 1675 at age 73 in Paris.
