          Gertrud Schwarz-Helberger's Biography

          German painter and graphic artist who lived in Austria, as well as a member of the Zinkenbacher painter colony.
          After training as a pianist in Frankfurt, she moved to Vienna after marrying a Viennese doctor named Schwarz. There she devoted herself mainly to painting. In addition, she was a graphic designer, dealing with monotypes and surreal glass images. In 1930 she was listed as a member of “Viennese Women’s Art”. Her teacher was Ferdinand Kitt, who taught at the Women’s Academy Vienna from 1927-1947.
          She died on 15 January 1991 in Klosterneuburg, aged 96.
          From 5 July to 5 October 2014, the Museum Zinkenbacher Malerkolonie presented an extensive solo exhibition “In Freedom, Only to the Flair – The World of Gertrude Schwarz-Helberger”.
          The Albertina in Vienna keeps two of her pictures, other works are in the possession of the Ministry of Education.
