Georges Vallerey's Biography
French champion swimmer. He came from a family of swimmers, who nicknamed him “Yoyo.” He began competing in 1943, shortly after being awarded the Military Cross for saving French sailors from drowning. In 1945, he broke the European 100 and 200 m backstroke records. During his sporting career, between 1945 and 1949, he held seven European records. In 1946, he became the world record holder of the 3 × 100 m medley, then the 4 X 100 and the 4 X 200. At the Summer Olympic Games in 1948, he won bronze in the 100 backstroke. In 1950, he was diagnosed with nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) and he could no longer swim. After four years of very painful treatments, he died in Casablanca on October 4, 1954.
