George van Heukelom's Biography
Dutch engineer and architect who first designed and engineered structures such as bridges, platform changes and station canopies for the State Railways. He proceeded to design buildings such as the Maastricht Railway Station (1912-1915), the first in the 20th century used not only as a terminus, but also designed as a station for passing trains.
His most famous work is the Derde Administratiegebouw (Third Administration Building, known as The Inkwell), completed in 1921. Constructed with 21 million bricks, it is the largest brick building in the Netherlands and one of the largest in Europe.
Van Heukelom was also active in the field of restoration of churches and historic buildings. He died in Utrecht on 17 February 1952, aged 81.
