George Oppenheimer's Biography
American playwright, columnist drama critic and co-founder of Viking Press.
After graduating from Williams College, he studied at Harvard and landed a job as publicatons manager for publisher Alfred A. Knopf. The lure of Hollywood beckoned and he moved to California where he worked initially for the movie mogul Samuel Goldwyn, then for Metro Goldwyn Mayer film studios. He was one of the collaborators on the screenplay for the Marx Brothers film “A Day at the Races.” His work on the screenplay of the film “The War Against Mrs. Hadley” won him an Oscar nomination. He wrote his first play in 1932 entitled “Here Today” and starring Ruth Gordon. After a stint in India during WWII, he began writing for TV. To his credit are 29 episodes of the popular series “Topper.” In 1955 he returned to NY when he joined Newsday as a columnist. Beginning in 1963 he was the publication’s drama critic, a job he enjoyed for several years. He served as president of the New York Drama Critics Circle from 1970-1972.
Oppenheimer died on August 14,1977 in New York City.
