          George Crabbe's Biography

          British noted poet who was successful after 1781. Apprenticed first to a doctor, he began to practice medicine in 1775 with small success, ending his practice in 1780. His first poem appeared at this time and he moved to London in 1780 where he sought the aid of Edmund Birke. That year he became the curate of Aldeburgh and published “The Library.” He was destitute during his early attempts to write and later, after being befriended by distinguished people, he wrote about the struggle of poverty. He had poor health from 1822, but his marriage was noted as a happy one.
          Crabbe became rector at Trowbridge until his death 2/03/1832, Trowbridge, England.
