George Bowering's Biography
Canadian professor and writer, producing works of fiction, poetry, history and biography. He and fellow writers founded the journal Tish and he served as editor from 1961-1963.. A Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, he was named Canadian Parliamentary Poet Laureate in 2002, the first person to be awarded that distinction. He was also appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2002 and the Order of British Columbia in 2004.
From 1954 to 1957 he was a Royal Air Force photographer. He has taught at various universities; from 1972 to 2001 he was on the faculty of Simon Fraser University. His first play was written in 1962; his first collection of poems, “Sticks and Stones,” was published in 1963 and his first novel, “Mirror on the Floor” was published in 1967. He has produced well over 50 books.
