          Georg Brauer's Biography

          German chemist and university professor whose main research areas were inorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry and metal chemistry. Brauer was the publisher of the three-volume manual Handbuch der präparativer Chemie published in 1946.
          Brauer studied chemistry and promoted chemistry at the University of Freiburg in 1932 with his work on cubic space-centered alloy phases and the atomic radii of base metals in alloys. In 1940, he was habilitated at the University of Darmstadt to work on the oxides, nitrides and carbides of niobium. In 1946 he became a professor in Freiburg, and in 1959 he received a professorship at the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Freiburg, which he held until his retirement in 1976.
          He died on 26 February 2001 in Freiburg im Breisgau, aged 92.
