          Gabriel Mendez Plancarte's Biography

          Mexican catholic priest, historian, humanist and philosopher. He was ordained priest on 30 October 1927. Soon after, he moved to Belgium to study social sciences at the Catholic University of Leuven. He returned to Mexico and taught Latin and literature at the Seminary of Zamora. In 1932, he moved to Mexico City to teach Latin, literature, world history, philosophy and theology at the Theological Seminary of Mexico. Moreover, he was a visiting professor at Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio and at Laval University in Quebec City. He gave courses on Mexican humanism and literature at the Colegio de Mexico and the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 1942, he was a founding member and vice president of the Seminario de Cultura Mexicana. In 1946, he was elected a corresponding member of the Mexican Academy of Language.
          He died in Mexico City on December 16, 1949.
