          Friedrich Wilhelm Ristenpart's Biography

German astronomer who worked on compiling a directory of the positions of all fixed stars in all star catalogues, with the support of the astronomer Arthur Auwers and the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Ristenparts undertook this fixed star sky project at the Kiel Observatory from April 1900.
In early 1908 he received a call to become director of the Chilean National Observatory in Santiago de Chile, where he began work at the end of September. In addition to modern instruments, he was allowed to relocate the observatory from the city centre to the southern town of Lo Espejo. Over time, there were difficulties with the observatory staff, and political circumstances meant that his contract was not renewed in 1913. Despite his intention to return to Germany, he took his own life on 9 April 1913, aged 44, in Santiago de Chile.
