          Fredy Budzinski's Biography

German cycling journalist who served as editor-in-chief of at least three major sporting newspapers.
For several years beginning in 1904 he worked as a freelancer for the newspaper Rad-Welt; he was appointed editor-in-chief in 1912. Rad-Welt was one of the first pure sports magazines in Germany (with a daily circulation of 100,000).
In 1920, he organized for the first time the championship of newspaper riders, a popular festival-like event in Berlin, which was held intermittently until the 1950s.
From 1924 to 1933 Budzinski was editor-in-chief of the “Federal newspaper”, the organ of the federation of German cyclists (BDR). He had to leave this position in 1933 because of his non-Aryan (Jewish) wife.
From 1934 to 1935 Budzinski was able to work for the magazine “Illustrierter Radrennsport” as editor-in-chief, as it was still privately owned. However, when it was merged with the body of the association “The German cyclist”, he was fired again because of his Jewish wife. Carl Diem procured him the job of deputy press officer at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Because Diem continued to support him, he then became the chief editor of the newspaper The German cyclist.
Fredy Budzinski was the brother of the Berlin costume designer William Budzinski and the father of journalist Klaus Budzinski. He died in Berlin on 6 January 1970, aged 90.
