          Frederik Philips's Biography

          Dutch banker and tobacco trader.
          From May 1891 to 1898 Frederik Philips was the main lender of Philips & Co. In 1898 his son Gerard became co-partner. His youngest son Anton joined them in 1912.
          He was the son of Lion Philips (29 October 1794, Zaltbommel – 28 december 1866, Zaltbommel) and Sophie Presburg (15 November 1797, Nijmegen – 7 Augustus 1854, Zaltbommel ), who married 15 November 1820 in Nijmegen. He had a brother August Philips (3 December 1823 6 AM , Zaltbommel – 10 October 1891, Amsterdam) and sister Nanetta Leonora Jeannetta Philips (14 November 1834 4 PM, Zaltbommel – 5 July 1885).
          His aunt Henriëtte Presburg (20 September 1788, Nijmegen – 30 November 1863, Trier) married 22 September 1814 the German lawyer Heinrich Marx (15 April 1777, Saarlouis – 10 May 1838, Trier), and became the mother of Karl Marx. They were Jewish, but Heinrich converted to Protestantism around 1820 as Jewish lawyers were not permitted. Their remaining 7 children (2 died early) children were baptised Augustus 1824, but Henriëtte waited for it till November 1825. After the death of Heinrich Marx (1838), Lion Philips helped her with financial affairs. In 1859 she appointed him also as his executor. Marx wrote part of Das Kapital in Zaltbommel and got stipendia via his uncle Lion .
          Lion’s son Benjamin Frederik David Philips, the name Benjamin was later added, married 20 May 1857 in Zaltbommel Maria Heyligers (12 February 1836, Batavia – 10 Augustus 1921, Hilversum).
          They got nine children in Zaltbommel.
