Franz Heckendorf's Biography
German Expressionist painter and graphic artist, who had great success, especially in the Weimar Republic. From 1916 to 1918 he was a member of the executive committee and jury of the Berlin Secession.
Heckendorf had a dynamic painting style, emphasizing the expressive power of hard contours and strong, bright colours. His oil paintings, pastels and watercolours depict figures as well as landscapes and still lifes.
The Nazis considered his paintings as “degenerate art”; they were removed from the National Gallery in Berlin, stored in a depot and then sold abroad or burned.
Heckendorf was arrested on 24 February 1943, and sentenced to ten years in prison on 22 March 1944, after he helped Berlin Jews, who had been threatened with deportation to extermination camps, to flee to Switzerland. He was imprisoned until the Gestapo sent him to the Mauthausen concentration camp at the end of April 1945, where he was freed by the US troops in May 1945. He died on 17 August 1962 in Munich, aged 73.
