Francisco Sánchez Fernández's Biography
Francisco Sánchez Fernández, better known as Tío Camuñas or Francisquete, was one of the most famous guerrilla fighter during the Spanish War of Independence.
On May 30, 1785, at twenty-three years old, he married Águeda Maria Martín Consuegra, with whom he has six children: Hilario (14 January 1788), Mauricia (1793), Antonio Eustaquio (April 15, 1796), Antonio Pantaleon (July 27, 1798), Francisco (d. 1809) and Ramona de la Cruz (September 14, 1800). It is believed that his profession was postman, which would later serve in his time as a fighter because of her agility and riding knowledge of the area.
The death of his brother by pro French authorities, together with the abuses of French domination over the town and the death of his son Francisco on July 13 1809 at the age of ten, drives Francisco to tour neighboring towns calling for help from friends. He gathered thirty horsemen and skilled marksmen, and began his fight against the French, who popularised the phrase “¡Que viene el tío Camuñas!” (“Uncle Camuñas Coming!”) screamed in horror in view of his reputation for ruthless.
Francisquete was shot in November 13, 1811 in Belmonte
