Spanish Galician expatriate businessman in Cuba and philanthropist of the first third of the twentieth century.
He emigrated to Cuba in 1904, where he made a good fortune. In 1912 he participated in the founding of the company “Chantada, Carballedo y sus comarcas” based in Havana and of which he became president in 1924. This company was responsible for the construction of the schools of Merlán, A Laxe, and Vilaquinte. His philanthropic work was recognized in 1928 with a tribute in Madrid.
In June 1934 he organized one of the main school excursions of the period to get to know Galicia, which began with a banquet and speeches in La Barrela in which Otero Pedrayo, Ramón Suárez Picallo, and Alexandre Bóveda took part.
He was a member of the Galeguista Party, of which he was a shareholder, and participated as a speaker in the propaganda campaign for the Statute of Autonomy in Pereira, Chantada, Taboada, Carballedo and A Barrela. He was a representative of the agrarians of the region as president and founder of the Agrarian Union of Carballedo, whose meeting house he built. In April 1936 he was proclaimed a delegate to participate in the election of the President of the Republic, although he withdrew when the Galeguista Party became part of the Popular Front. He was present at the Assembly of the Faculty of Medicine on 17 May 1936, where the call for a referendum on the Statute of Autonomy was declared.
He left Spain on 4 November 1936 with his son and died in exile in Havana on 3 October 1937 at the age of 47.
Francisco Domínguez is the grandfather of the American linguist Frank A. Domínguez, a professor of Spanish language and literature at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
