          Fiorella Cava's Biography

Peruvian singer, musician and LGBTQI+ rights activist, formerly known as Sergio Cava when she was a member of JAS.
Cava studied Law at the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru and Communication Sciences at the University of Lima. At the same time, she began a career as a musician, which prompted her to prepare a law thesis on intellectual rights in the phonographic industry. Later, at the age of 23, she obtained the position of manager of the Consortium of Musical Publishers of Peru.
Cava’s musical career began with the band Hielo, with whom she recorded her first hit, “El rock del vago”, which ranked among the most listened to songs on Panamericana Radio in 1983. Three years later, in 1986, together with the drummer Jes£s Hurtado and the Bassist Alex Nathanson, she formed JAS. The following year they released Mueres en tu ley, whose promotional single “Ya no quiero m s ska” (I don’t want more ska) became the band’s most recognized song. In 1992 they released their second album, ¨De qu‚ te quejas? (What are you complaining about?), which did not get the same response as the first.
After the dissolution of JAS in 1995, Fiorella Cava moved away from public life to start her gender transition. After travelling through Argentina, Chile and Spain, she decided to return to Lima to live openly with her new gender identity. In 2004, while studying for her master’s degree in History and Anthropology of Culture at the National University of San Marcos, she published Identidad, cultura y sociedad: un grito desde el silencio (Identity, culture and society: a cry from the silence), one of the first academic texts on transgenderism in Peru. After a fourteen-year legal fight, in 2012 the Superior Court of Lima ruled in her favour and she was able to legally change her name on her identity document. The press reported the news, and she received hostility from the media, including when she was attacked by a far-right group in a Lima park, an attack she denounced. As an activist for trans rights, she founded the first association of trans people in Peru, CISNE (Center for Identity and Sexuality New Existence).
Cava returned to music as a soloist, and released Rituales vac¡os (Empty Rituals) in 2009, together with producer Dante Gonz les. Likewise, in 2020 JAS was re-formed with new members, with Cava as vocalist, and they published the double anthology CD Antolog¡a 1986?2019. At the same time, since 2021, they lead an experimental musical project called C.A.V.A.
