Filippo Sibirani's Biography
Italian mathematician who published many pure and applied math articles, many of which were collected after his death in the volume Mathematical Writings in honour of Philip Sibirani (Bologna, Zuffi, 1957), which also contains a complete list of his publications. He wrote the “Theory of Probabilities” section in the Encyclopaedia Hoepli of Elementary Mathematics.
He graduated in mathematics at the University of Bologna in 1902 and remained there until 1906 as an assistant of infinitesimal calculus and rational mechanics. From 1907 to 1922 he taught at the Technical Institute of Milan. During the three-year period 1909-1909 he was assigned to analytical geometry at the University of Parma. In 1922, following a competition, he became a professor of financial mathematics at the University of Trieste, which he held until 1935.
In 1929 he was appointed rector of the newly founded Institute of Economics and Commerce at the University of Bologna. In 1945-1946 he reorganized the Italian Mathematical Union, of which he had previously been an administrator.
He died in Bologna on 9 March 1957, aged 77.
