          Ezzard Charles's Biography

American World Heavyweight Champion who had the unfortunate distinction of holding the title between the more popular fighters Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano.
Charles fought 122 times as a pro, winning 96 of the bouts. He did not have the magnetism or killer instinct that draws crowds. The fight that brought him the title was even considered dull. He out-pointed Jersey Joe Walcott in June 1949, winning the National Boxing Association’s crown. He held the title two years, losing a rematch with Walcott when the he was KO’d in the seventh round.
Charles retired from the ring to work as a salesman and then for African American youths in Chicago out of a small office sponsored by Mayor Daley’s Commission on Youth Welfare.
He died of multiple sclerosis at age 53 in Chicago, IL on May 27, 1975.
