Eugène Le Bègue de Germiny's Biography

French lawyer and politician of the nineteenth century. A rising figure of the Catholic right in Paris, he was struck down in 1876 by a scandal.
His reputation and career atrophied on 6 December 1876 at about 11 pm, when he was arrested by the moral police while he was in the Champs-Élysées, near the cafe des ambassadeurs, accompanied by a young worker of 18 years, Pierre Chouard.
Accused of indecent exposure, Germiny defended himself by claiming that he went to this notorious place of homosexual encounters only to investigate “some scandalous facts.” On 30 December 1876, the Criminal Court sentenced him to two months’ imprisonment and a fine of 200 francs.
Deprived of his municipal mandate and his position as administrator of the Catholic University, he served his sentence in La Santé Prison, separated from his wife in 1886, and went into exile in Argentina under the name of “Lebègue”.
In Buenos Aires, where he lived in concubinage with a mulatto, he wrote some articles for L’Inde, one of the newspapers of the French colony. He worked as a clerk before passing law examinations to be admitted to the local bar. He successfully resumed his former activity as a lawyer in the Argentine capital, where he died in June 1898, aged 56.
