          Ernst Majer-Leonhard's Biography

German pedagogue, director of the Lessing-Gymnasium from 1926, who promoted the humanistic education ideal of the traditional Frankfurt grammar school by combining it with thoughts of the Prussian school reformers. During his tenure as head of the Lessing-Gymnasium, it became one of the first Frankfurt grammar schools to admit girls. After the Nazi seizure of power Majer-Leonhard’s friendliness with Jews as well as a performance of an opera by Paul Hindemith at the school, led school authorities to transfer him to the Reform Grammar School in Höchst in 1933, and in 1937 he was forced to retire. He died on 9 July 1966 in Falkenstein im Taunus, aged 76.
