          Ernst Kirchner's Biography

German expressionist painter, sculptor and graphic artist. Influenced by neo-impressionists, he used brilliant color and large forms, angular, intense and often disoriented. He studied architecture in Dresden 1901-1905 and art in Munich 1903-1904. In 1905, he and three other students formed a commune where they lived and worked together, holding some exhibitions.
Kirchner was conscripted in 1915, discharged with TB, and went to Switzerland for treatment in 1917. He had a series of nervous breakdowns and settled in Frauenkirch in 1919 to continue his work.
His depressions continued to worsen and he was condemned as “degenerate” by Nazis in 1937. He committed suicide on 6/15/1938, Davos, Switzerland.
