          Erich Ponto's Biography

          German actor.
          Ponto had his debut in 1908 at the Municipal Theatre of Passau, later in Liberec/North Bohemia. Since 1914 Ponto played in Dresden, where he lived until 1947. In 1920 he had his first contact with the film, but only in 1930 he began his career as a film actor. In the Third Reich, he appeared in several Nazi propaganda. In 1949 he made the internationally famous film The Third Man with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotten.
          Besides his numerous film roles he played in theater and commuted daily between Berlin and Dresden. Ponto was very popular in Dresden.
          He died on 4 February 1957 in Stuttgart after a long illness.
