          Éric Gérard's Biography

          Belgian engineer who began his career at the Belgian Telegraph Administration. Specializing in electricity, a discipline that was born at that time, he spent his entire career there, thanks to Georges Montefiore-Levi, who in 1883 appointed him director of the electrotechnical institute he had just founded at the University of Liège. Creator of the Lessons on Electricity and the Electrical Measurement Course, Éric Gérard is an important figure in the beginnings of electricity science and its applications in Europe: the Institut Montefiore acquired a world-wide reputation.
          He died on 28 March 1916 in Paris, aged 59.
