          Emilio Adolfo Westphalen's Biography

          Peruvian surrealist poet, essayist and cultural promoter. He was married to the painter Judith Westphalen (1922-1976) with whom he had two daughters, Inés Westphalen and Silvia Ortiz. His poetry is brief, but key literature in Spanish. With affinities with the Surrealist movement, in collaboration with his friend, the poet and painter Peruvian César Moro made the first surrealist exhibition in Lima in 1935. Very close also to the renowned Indian writer Jose Maria Arguedas promoted their work through their journals. In addition to writing a couple of essays on his career, he dedicated one of his poems. He died in Lima on 17 August 2001.
          The Nobel Prize for Literature Octavio Paz said of him. “Emilio Adolfo Westphalen is one of the most purely poets among poets who write in Spanish His poetry is not contaminated ideology or moral or theological. Poetry of poet and teacher, not a preacher or inquisitor. Poetry does not judge, but we are astonished and amazed. ”
