Ellen Epstein's Biography
German-Jewish pianist who played with the Berlin Symphony Orchestra and performed on two concert tours to England in May and November 1933. Epstein taught at the Klindworth-Scharwenka Conservatory. She made silhouettes of the musicians she met, which she offered to the press for printing, but a planned book edition was not realized.
After the transfer of power to the National Socialists (Nazis) Epstein could no longer give concerts in Germany. In August 1935 she was excluded from the Reich Music Chamber, which effectively meant a professional ban. Even her private piano lessons were cut for racist reasons, as she was classified non-Aryan. After performing in London in November 1933, she made only one more public appearance, in June 1938 at a Jewish cultural event in Berlin.
Like thousands of other Jews Ellen Epstein was used by the National Socialist (Nazi) authorities for forced labour. In October 1942, together with her sister, she was deported to Riga. Most of the deportees in her group, 878 people, were shot dead in the forest by Latvian SS auxiliary troops immediately after arrival on 22 October 1942. The exact circumstances of Epstein’s death are unknown. Her estate in Berlin was wiped out.
