          Elisabeth Zernike's Biography

          Dutch poet, translator and writer from a noted family.
          Her Baptist parents Carl Frederick August Zernike (23 January 1859, Amsterdam – 30 October 1922, Amsterdam) and Antje Dieperink (1859-11 January 1932, Doorn) were teachers. They married 5 Augustus 1886 in Amsterdam and got six children. They stimulated the education of all of their children, including their daughters. Her sister Anne Zernike (30 April, Amsterdam – 6 March 1972, Amersfoort), became a Rilke translator, and also the first Dutch female teacher of religion and the first female minister in the Netherlands. His sister Lize Zernike (1890-1989) was the grandmother of Noble Prize winner Gerard ‘t Hooft (5 July 1946, Den Helder). Her brother Frits became a famous Noble Prize winning scientist.
          She was the first Dutch female in history to receive a literary price. In 1921 she won the Haagse Post Prize (Today, the prestigious “Lucy B. en C.W. van der Hoogtprijs”) for “Het schamele deel” (1919) that deeply moved the poet Martinus Nijhoff.
          Between 1919 and 1964 she published Dutch books, essays and poetry.
          She died 12 March 1982 in Laren.
