          Édouard Vuillard's Biography

French artist, a painter, lithographer and set decorator, an early member of the Nabis, founded by Serusier.
Vuillard lived most of his artistic life in Paris, in a small apartment tended by his mother who had been a dressmaker. A student at the Académie Julian between 1888 and 1890, he was part of the Nabis group who left the Academie, at the urging of Sérusier.
Vuillard shared a studio with Bonnard and Lugné-Poë, whose theatre he helped to decorate. Between 1893 and 1914, he painted small interiors, portraits of friends, decorations for theatres, and a set of paintings for Thadée Natanson, publisher of La Revue Blanche, the publication to which both he and Bonnard contributed lithographs. From 1914 until his death, he devoted himself entirely to subtly harmonious, decorative, and nostalgic domestic scenes. He died just after the outbreak of WW II, at La Baule, France.
