Duke of Berry Charles Ferdinand's Biography
French royalty, the third child and youngest son of the future king, Charles X of France, and his wife, Princess Maria Theresa of Savoy. He was stabbed and mortally wounded at the Paris Opera on 13 February 1820 by Louis Pierre Louvel, an anti-royal bonapartist. He died the next day.
In June 1832, two years after the overthrow of his father, Charles X, his widow, Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Sicile, duchess de Berry (1798–1870), led a royalist insurrection in the Vendée in a failed attempt to restore their son to the French throne.
They had married on 17 June 1816. Three children were born before the duke’s death, with one surviving infancy: his daughter, Louise d’Artois (1819-1864), who married Charles III of Parma. A son was born posthumously: Henri d’Artois, Duke of Bordeaux and Count of Chambord (29 September 1820 – 24 August 1883), who married Archduchess Maria Theresa of Austria-Este.
