          Dietrich Thurau's Biography

          German professional road bicycle racer. His greatest victory was the one-day classic “Liège-Bastogne-Liège” (1979). In 1977-Tour de France he fought a heroic battle with the eventual winner Bernard Thévenet, won four stages and was in the yellow jersey as leader of the general classification for totally 15 days. He also won 29 six-day races. At the world championships 1977 and 1979, “Didi” Thurau won the silver medal.
          After he had retired in 1989, he revealed doping throughout his career. In 1998, Thurau was fined 20’000 DM for forgery. In 2012, he stole 49’000 DM insurance benefits (intended for his father Helmut) for himself.
          He is divorced and has two sons (Björn and Urs), both also road bicycle racers. After his cycling career, Thurau works as a professional tennis coach and as a real estate agent. He lives in Switzerland with his partner.
