          Diego Valeri's Biography

          Italian poet and literary critic. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris in 1912 and returned to Italy in 1914 where he worked as a teacher. He experienced difficulties due to his anti-fascist thinking. In 1939 he became a professor of French language and literature. After Mussolini’s arrest in 1943, Valeri became editor of the Venetian daily Il Gazzettino. On 8 September 1943 he emigrated to Switzerland and worked there as a journalist and translator. Later he taught in Padua and Lecce and was appointed Superintendant of Art of Venice; he moved to Venice and was also elected to the city parliament. He became a member of the French Honour Society on 6 April 1965.
          He died in Rome on 27 November 1976 at age 89.
