Dennis Eckersley's Biography
American baseball played, a right-handed pitcher who played with the Cleveland Indians (1975–1977), Boston Red Sox (1978–1984, 1998), Chicago Cubs (1984–1986), Oakland Athletics (1987–1995), and St. Louis Cardinals (1996–1997).
He pitched in the Division Series in 1996, has pitched in six Championship Series Games, three World Series Games and six All-Star Games. After attending Washington College in Fremont, CA., he was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the third round of free-agent draft picks 6/06/1972. Eckersley has played for the Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, St. Louis Cardinals and re-signed with the Boston Red Sox 12/09/1997. He was placed on the disabled list in 1985, 1989 and 1996.
He holds the A.L. career record for the most saves-323; most consecutive errorless games by a pitcher-470, pitched three one-hit complete-game victories, but also led the N.L. in 1974 for the highest amount of hit batsmen, 10, and the A.L. with 30 home runs allowed in 1978. Eckersley has been honored with the A.L. Rookie Pitcher of the Year in 1975, A.L. Most Valuable Player of the Year in 1992 and the A.L. Cy Young Award also in 1992. Eckersley also holds the all-time record for most games pitched, 525, and the most saves, 320. At 6′ 2″, 195 lbs., throws right, bats right and has played for the National League for five years and the American League for 19 years as of 1998.
Eck was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on Sunday, July 25, 2004 in a ceremony that began at 1:30 PM in Cooperstown, NY.
