American writer, the foremost scholar of and spokesperson for Appalachian life and literature and a pioneer of the Appalachian studies movement. Williams was also a folklorist, ballad collector and singer, linguist, professor, and college administrator. He married first Sylvia Graham, who died in 1942. On 31 July 1949 he married Elizabeth Lingerfelt. They had two children, David Cratis and Sophie. He died on 11 May 1985.
