          Clemens von Galen's Biography

German priest, a Roman Catholic Chaplain in 1904 and a Cardinal Archbishop in 1933. Though he took a patriotic stance as a loyal German, he espoused fairness, and his opposition to the Nazi regime grew from 1933. He had contempt for the propaganda and spoke out against the race doctrines openly, criticizing the Party and becoming one of Hitler’s most determined opponents.
Galen was confined to Munster but the Nazis did not openly challenge him until 1944, when he was sent to a concentration camp. He survived Sachselhausen to be rescued at the close of the war, but died not long after, on 3/22/1946, Munster, Germany.
