          Clemence Royer's Biography

Self-taught French scholar who lectured and wrote on economics, philosophy, science and feminism. She is best known for her controversial 1862 French translation of Charles Darwin’s On the Origin of Species.
Royer was an extraordinary nineteenth-century woman; a politically active left-wing thinker, she promoted social progression and advocated women’s rights. Royer’s unconventional outlook echoed through her private life, living openly as she did with a married man.
Royer died on 6 February 1902 at the Maison Galignani in Neuilly-sur-Seine.
