          Claude Simon's Biography

          French novelist often identified with the nouveau roman movement. His work is thematically and stylistically highly original with war as a constant and central theme.
          His father was a career officer who was killed in the First World War. Simon grew up with his mother and her family in Perpignan and he studied in Paris, Cambridge and Oxford. At the beginning of WW II Claude Simon took part in the battle of the Meuse (1940) and was taken prisoner by the Germans. He managed to escape and joined the resistance movement.
          He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1985.
