          Claude Farrère's Biography

          French prolific author. Following his father Farrère embarked on a military career and in 1894 entered the Naval Academy. He resigned in 1919 to devote himself entirely to writing, mostly travel narratives, on marine and essays on international affairs.
          In 1905 his work The Civilized earned him a Goncourt prize.
          he was particularly interested in Turkey and Japan. Claude Farrère was invited by the Japanese government in 1938.
          Claude Farrère was elected to the French Academy on 28 March 1935.
          He was president of the Association of Writers fighters . He gave his name to a literary award issued by the association, the Prix Claude Farrère created in 1959 for “a novel of imagination and having previously obtained no major literary prize”.
          He died 21 June 1957, Paris.
