As a kid, he was age 9 when his mom died and 17 when his dad died. He married a Taurus woman. Simmons did well in his own business, Simmons Tile Co. He was a ceramic tile contractor for 32 years, starting out by himself and gradually adding employees as the business grew, to a maximum of about 12 people. He made good money at it and invested in land development with a few other local businessmen and made a lot more. He worked 12 hours a day and didn’t go on vacations, though he loved baseball and would have played pro-ball if he had been good enough. Raised in poverty, he saw financial gain as security.
His health was always good until the onset of Alzheimer’s, somewhere in the years of his life. (Ten years prior to his death he showed no signs.) In the last two years he had no short term memory but still recognized people.
