          Claire Rommer's Biography

German actress who came to fame in the 1920s as a silent movie actress, often playing the roles of the lover or the saloon lady.
She received her artistic education at the Music School and at the Max Reinhardt School in Berlin. At the age of 17, she made her debut as an assistant at the Neues Volkstheater and at the Volksbühne. Even later, she appeared often as a soubrette in operettas and comedies on Berlin stages, especially at the Lustspielhaus.
She was married to the Jewish businessman Adolf Strenger (1888-1955) from 25 June 1927 until his death during a visit to West Berlin.
The seizure of power by the Nazis ended her film and stage career. She made her last stage appearance in 1934 at the Berlin Scala. In July 1938, she was excluded from any activity in the German film industry on the grounds that she was probably not Aryan. On 31 July 1940, she emigrated with her husband from France via Lisbon to the United States. She died of pneumonia on 19 August 1996 in London’s Chelsea district, aged 91.
