Charlotte Mörike's Biography
German noted family member, a pastor’s daughter, doctor’s wife and the mother of noted poet and writer Eduard Mörike. She is the subject of a biography, Geliebte Kinder – Das Leben der Dichtermutter Charlotte Dorothea Mörike (2009) written by Gudrun Maria Krickl.
Charlotte was the fifth child of the pastor of Grafenberg, Christian Friedrich Beyer (1735-1808) and his wife Augustine Friederike (1741-1809, nee Weckherlin).
When she visited Ludwigsburg in 1791, she met the city’s official physician Karl-Friedrich Mörike who was seven years her senior. The couple married in 1793, and between 1794 and 1816 their union produced thirteen children, although several died at a young age.
In September 1817, her husband died and she was forced to distribute their children among relatives. The two older sons Karl and Adolph Mörike came into conflict with the law several times, but Eduard felt obliged to always pay for all his relatives. In 1834 she finally moved with Eduard to his rectory in Cleversulzbach where she died on 26 April 1841 at age 69. Her son buried her in a grave next to Schiller’s mother, Elisabetha Dorothea Schiller.
