          Charles Philipson's Biography

Norwegian Jewish jurist, civil servant, (acting Consumer Ombudsman, and director of the Norwegian Competition Authority), and Supreme Court justice. He became a Supreme Court lawyer in 1961 and worked at the Government Attorney’s office until 1972. He was a district court judge in Oslo in 1973. In 1984 he became a Supreme Court Justice, the first in the country with a Jewish background.
In 1942, Philipson and his family avoided being deported with the DS “Donau,” the ship that transported a large part of the Norwegian Jewish population to Germany before being sent on to Auschwitz. The taxi with him, his mother, and sister was late for the Danube’s departure. Five days later they fled to safety in Sweden.
Philipson died on 26 September 1990 aged 61.
