          Charles Lartigue's Biography

French engineer who gave his name to a locomotive system, known as the Lartigue monorail.
He designed a route comprising only one single rail about a metre high above the ground maintained by an inverted V-shaped metal frame fixed to the ground. The equipment was mounted and the load was distributed on each side of the rail in the manner of a satchel. Originally a 90 km animal-drawn line was built.
On the same type of structure complete with two side guide rails, a steam traction demonstration line was built in London in 1886 and another 15 km long was built and operated in Ireland in County Kerry between Listowel and Ballybunion in 1888 and 1924. The steam locomotive was actually doubled with a boiler on either side of the rail. The line was closed, a result of the Irish Civil War, but had proven the validity of the concept.
Charles Lartigue died on 25 February 1907 at age 72.
